Kick-off of HyCARB. “Unique project to make chemistry more sustainable”
Carbon-based chemicals are everywhere in our daily lives. Think of plastics, fuels, household items such as paint and detergents, but also chemical building blocks for further processing in industry. Global demand for these products is expected to double by 2050. The problem is that they are currently still made from fossil raw materials, which leads to high CO2 emissions.

With the support of GroenvermogenNL and NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek), a major new project has therefore been launched: HyCARB. A broad consortium of 17 knowledge organisations and 28 companies is investigating innovations that are sustainable, but also cost-efficient, so that the Dutch chemical industry remains competitive in Europe and the rest of the world.

HyCARB stands or falls with good cooperation between all parties involved. On 11 March, the first important step took place with a major kick-off in Utrecht. More than 100 stakeholders gathered, including the next generation. After all, green chemistry is their future.

Koolstofhoudende chemicaliën komen overal voor in ons dagelijks leven. Denk aan plastics, brandstoffen, huishoudelijke artikelen zoals verf en wasmiddelen, maar ook aan chemische bouwstenen voor verdere verwerking in de industrie. De wereldwijde vraag naar deze producten verdubbelt naar verwachting in 2050. Probleem is dat ze momenteel nog worden gemaakt van fossiele grondstoffen, wat leidt tot veel CO2-uitstoot.

Met steun van GroenvermogenNL en NWO is daarom een groot nieuw project gestart: HyCARB. Een breed consortium van 17 kennisorganisaties en 28 bedrijven onderzoekt innovaties die duurzaam. Maar ook kostenefficiënt, zodat de Nederlandse chemie concurrerend blijft in Europa en in de rest van de wereld.

HyCARB staat of valt met een goede samenwerking tussen alle betrokken partijen. Op 11 maart vond de eerste belangrijke stap plaats met een grote kick-off in Utrecht. Ruim 100 betrokkenen kwamen bijeen. Ook van de volgende generatie. Immers: de groene chemie is hun toekomst.
